LaToya Malcolm, a former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant and celebrated beauty queen, has died at the age of 35. The Miss Universe Jamaica organization confirmed her passing in a statement shared on July 18, though no cause of death was disclosed.
"We mourn the passing of MUJ alumna LaToya Malcolm, who proudly competed in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica Competition," the organization wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and loved ones. Rest peacefully, LaToya. You will never be forgotten."
Malcolm competed in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica pageant, where Rachel Silvera ultimately won the crown. That same year, she captured the Miss Jamaica Bikini International title, earning recognition for best figure, best legs, and best condition.
Reflecting on her victory, she told the Jamaica Observer, "I live in the gym. I live in the dance studio on the dance floor. These competitions are not just a walk in the park. They are actually made from real sweat and tears."
Her triumph came just months after the death of her father, a loss she acknowledged publicly. She dedicated her win to him, writing, "My beloved father, Mr. Malcolm, this win was for you. Your one and only daughter continues to make you proud."
Beyond pageantry, Malcolm built a career as an actress, television presenter, and dance instructor. She appeared on the morning show Smile Jamaica earlier this month, sharing her passion for dance. "Rise and smile!" she posted on Instagram on July 3, thanking the program for featuring her.
Her interests extended to traveling, reading, and volunteer work, where she supported local youth with career development and job resources.
Tributes have poured in from fans and fellow contestants. Current Miss Universe Jamaica, Dr. Gabrielle Henry, wrote, "To hear of LaToya's passing is a great loss to her family and the wider community, Jamaica. Her impact will always be remembered and her voice will not be forgotten."
