Rihanna made a striking statement in custom Chanel at the Brussels premiere of Smurfs on Saturday, June 28. Accompanied by her partner A$AP Rocky, the global superstar turned heads in a look that paid subtle homage to the film’s iconic blue color palette—without being too literal.
Her ensemble, crafted by the storied French fashion house, featured a celadon green silk chiffon top and skirt. The sheer, flowing fabric was richly embellished with crystals, porcelain sequins, and delicate feathers. A testament to the craftsmanship of Chanel’s atelier, the couture look took a staggering 840 hours to complete.
The design drew inspiration from Chanel’s Spring 2003 haute couture collection. That season, the house—then led by Karl Lagerfeld—offered a lineup that Vogue described as “an exquisite achievement.” In her original review, fashion critic Sarah Mower wrote of the collection’s fondant hues, noting how “the palest pink, peach and blue,” along with layers of black lace and flashes of silver sequins, lent the pieces a dreamlike femininity. “Even the house tweed evaporated into sparkling nothingness at the edges,” Mower wrote. Rihanna’s look channels that same ethereal elegance, updated with her signature edge.
This appearance is the latest stop on what’s become a high-fashion tour across Europe for the power couple. Just a day earlier, the two were seen in Paris attending Jonathan Anderson’s debut menswear show for Dior. There, Rihanna wore a white button-down shirt layered under a pistachio green waistcoat, while A$AP Rocky added flair with a boldly striped Dior tie in red, green, and royal blue. Later that day, they were spotted at the Temple de l’Etoile, where Rocky unveiled his latest collection for AWGE.
Now in Brussels, the couple’s style streak shows no signs of slowing down. Rihanna lends her voice to the character of Smurfette in the new Smurfs movie, marking another venture into animation for the multi-hyphenate artist.
As for whether Brussels is their final stop on this European style marathon—or if more high-fashion moments are on the horizon—only time and the paparazzi will reveal. One thing’s certain: wherever Rihanna goes, couture follows.
