Netflix’s popular adventure series Outer Banks will conclude with its fifth season, as confirmed by the creators and cast. Since its premiere in 2020, Outer Banks has followed a group of friends known as the Pogues, led by Chase Stokes’ character John B. Routledge, on a journey of treasure hunting and friendship. The show’s creators, Shannon Burke, Josh Pate, and Jonas Pate, recently shared that ending with five seasons was always part of their vision.
The show’s concept was inspired by a 2017 photograph of teenagers on a beach at dusk, which sparked the idea of “a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship. At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five-season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away.”
The announcement came ahead of the second half of season four, set to release on November 7. This season, described by the creators as “the longest and hardest but most rewarding to produce,” will conclude with a feature-length finale, which they believe is their “best, most powerful episode.” Looking ahead to the final season, they expressed mixed emotions: “Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting Season Four behind us, and are turning to Season Five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago.”
Stokes shared his reflections on the series’ conclusion on social media, expressing gratitude to fans: “My heart’s heavy writing this one... One last ride. Thank you to everybody who has tuned in these past five years. You’ve given us more than we could ever give back to you. It’s always gonna be Pogues 4 Life.” For Stokes, Outer Banks has been pivotal, not just professionally but personally, acknowledging the show as a “turning point” in his career.
The series cast also includes Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, and Carlacia Grant. Bailey noted the cast’s unique camaraderie, which has resonated with audiences. “The chemistry, from day one, we knew was special,” Bailey shared, adding that fans are drawn to “the friendship arcs and the way that they’re able to relate a certain person in their friend group to one of the characters.”
Production details and release dates for season five remain unconfirmed, but the creators are optimistic it will be their “best yet.”
