The 2024 VMAs were originally scheduled for September 10, but MTV pushed the ceremony one day in order to avoid a programming conflict with the American presidential debate scheduled for that day.
Megan Thee Stallion has had a great year, with her singles and self titled album, “Megan.” The Grammy-winning hip-hop star was announced Thursday as MC of the 2024 ceremony. She has been nominated five times for this years VMAs including Best Collaboration for “Wanna Be” with GloRilla and Best Hip-Hop for “BOA.” This will be her first time hosting the VMAs. The artist previously hosted “Saturday Night Live” and co-hosted “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
“Mamushi” became the breakout hit from the new album, with a music video released in early August that took adantage of the dance trend that the song had already inspired. Filmed in Tokyo, Japan, the video stars Megan and actor Shô Kasamatsu, known for his roles in multiple series including “Tokyo Vice” and “Gannibal.”
This year’s VMA’s performers so far include Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Halsey, Lenny Kravitz, Rauw Alejandro, Camila Cabello, Benson Boone, GloRilla, and Lisa. Katy Perry will receive the 2024 Vanguard award as well as perform a career-spanning medley.
Megan Thee Stallion tied with SZA by receiving five nominations this year including Best Hip Hop, “Best Collaboration” with GloRilla and;Best Direction for her ;BOA music video off her latest solo LP. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift leads with 10 nominations followed by Post Malone with nine. Ariana Grande, Eminem and Sabrina Carpenter all earned six nods each.
Earlier this year, the Houston native earned her third, Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 with the release of her dynamic song “HISS,” which follows her other chart-topping hits such as “Savage (Remix)” with Beyoncé and “WAP” with Cardi B. It also became the first-ever, solo female rap song to debut No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200.
