After a whirlwind reunion and second marriage, Hollywood's iconic couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have officially called it quits. In a filing with the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Lopez has petitioned for divorce, citing April 26, 2024 as the date of their separation.
The once-inseparable pair, dubbed "Bennifer" by adoring fans, first met on the set of the 2003 film Gigli and embarked on a high-profile romance that captivated the public eye. They were engaged in 2002 but postponed their 2003 wedding, ultimately splitting up in 2004.
Nearly two decades later, the two rekindled their flame in 2021, stunning the world with their reunion. They wasted no time, marrying in a small Las Vegas ceremony in July 2022 followed by a lavish wedding celebration in Georgia the next month.
However, the second chance at love was short-lived. In court documents obtained by the BBC, Lopez listed April 26, 2024 as the date of their separation, just over a week before she was photographed attending the Met Gala solo. Affleck was reportedly absent from the event due to a work commitment.
"Things that are private, I'd always felt, are sacred and special, because, in part, they're private. So this was something of an adjustment for me," Affleck had admitted in a 2023 documentary about the couple's relationship.
The signs of trouble had been mounting for months, with the pair increasingly seen at events and red carpets without each other. They even put their $65 million Beverly Hills mansion on the market, while Affleck purchased his own home separately.
Neither Lopez, 55, nor Affleck, 52, listed any details of a prenuptial agreement in the divorce filing. The court has ordered them to disclose their full financial information, including current income, expenses, properties and debts, within the next 60 days.
The end of Bennifer 2.0 marks yet another chapter in the couples' long and storied romantic history. Both had high-profile relationships and marriages in the years between their initial split and reunion.
