Lizzo has revealed that she was a “late bloomer,” sharing that she waited until her 30s to lose her virginity after making a personal promise tied to her music career.
Speaking on the _Friends Keep Secrets_ podcast, the 37-year-old said she had committed to not having sex until she achieved a major milestone. “I just promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn't have sex until I won a Grammy,” she said.
Lizzo won her first Grammy Awards in 2020, taking home three on the night, and later fulfilled that promise the same year. “It was not the night of Grammys,” she clarified, but confirmed it happened soon after.
Reflecting on her journey, she admitted, “I was a late bloomer. I lied about it for a long time,” explaining that she often felt embarrassed about her experience, especially among friends. “It was so embarrassing… I said, ‘I love the D.’ I said that,” she recalled, describing how she tried to avoid the conversation.
The singer also spoke about how her upbringing influenced her decisions. “When we were teenagers at my church, we all made a pact that we wouldn’t do anything before marriage,” she said, adding that fear and insecurity also played a role in her waiting. “And then, I was just so scared. Like, nobody wanted to kiss me,” she said.
Lizzo further revealed that she had her first kiss at 21, an experience she described as disappointing. “I was actually very upset about it… I was like, ‘My first kiss is ruined.’ I was so mad,” she said. Despite being known for promoting confidence and sexual expression, Lizzo shared that opening up about her personal timeline has lifted a burden. She said discussing it publicly has helped her let go of the
shame she once felt.
Now in a relationship with Myke Wright, whom she has been dating since 2022, Lizzo noted that her current partner has helped reshape her
perspective on intimacy.
