Tramell Tillman made history at the 2025 Emmy Awards, becoming the first Black man to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Seth Milchick in Apple TV+’s Severance. His victory marks a landmark moment in Emmy history and a powerful recognition of his breakthrough performance.

The 40-year-old actor accepted the award at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14. In his emotional speech, Tillman paid tribute to his mother, describing her as his first acting coach and the person who stood by him when no one else did. He also honored trailblazing Black actors who came before him, including Andre Braugher and Michael K. Williams, acknowledging their influence and the path they paved for actors like himself.

The supporting actor category was highly competitive this year. Tillman’s fellow nominees included his Severance castmates Zach Cherry and John Turturro, as well as actors from acclaimed shows such as The White Lotus and Paradise. Tillman’s win was not only his first Emmy but also his first nomination, underscoring the significance of this moment in his career.

Tillman’s portrayal of Seth Milchick has been widely praised for its nuance and unsettling intensity. As Lumon Industries’ floor manager, Milchick is outwardly polite but quietly menacing, making him one of the most memorable characters on the show. In recent interviews, Tillman reflected on how the second season of Severance delved deeper into Milchick’s identity, exploring his awareness of race and the significance of his position as one of the few Black employees within the corporation.

The night was also a big one for Severance as a whole. The Apple TV+ drama collected eight awards from 27 nominations, making it the most awarded series of the evening. Tillman’s win was seen not only as a personal triumph but also as a milestone for diversity in television. For years, Black actors have been underrepresented in Emmy drama categories, and his recognition is being hailed as a long overdue breakthrough.
