Leeds are only one win away from immediately returning to the Premier League after a 4-0 dismantling of Norwich City at Elland road after their first leg match ended 0-0. After seven minutes, the deadlock of 0-0 in the first leg was duly broken. Shouldering the burden of expectation from a fervent home crowd.
Leeds won a free-kick high up in the pitch when Joe Rodon strode forward from Centre-Back. Agnus Gunn was evidently expecting a delivery into the area from Crysencio Summerville but an inventive effort from Ilia Gruev caught the shot-stopper flat-footed as he whipped in his first goal for Leeds.
Norwich found themselves two goals down soon when Joel Piroe nodded in Wilfired Gnoto’s superb cross at the back post. Illan Meslier soon after denied Josh Sargent in a one on one situation denying their pursuit for a comeback and keeping up the momentum for the hosts. The hosts did not retaliate in any way as they added a third before half-time with an emphatic Georgino Rutter strike that cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar after a swift break.
Norwich were somewhat lucky not to be further behind after a late first half flurry of attempts which did not cease after the restart. We saw Piroe force Gunn into two close range stops. Farke watched on the sidelines as his side cut through Norwich once more, extending their lead through Summerville who tucked in Junior Firpo’s cut-back witch over twenty minutes of play remaining.
A dismayed David Wagner could do little to change the outcome with his late alterations to the game proving inconsequential. As such, a third consecutive defeat at Elland Road means that the Canaries will spend a third consecutive season in the second tier. Meanwhile, victory for Leeds against either Southampton or West Bromwich in the Championship play-off final would mark the 10th time in 20 years the third placed side have gone up.
