The Dallas Police Department confirmed that Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong (56) was arrested and now faces charges for assault with a deadly weapon. Armstrong, under the influence of alcohol, struck a woman with a gun and threatened to shoot her during an argument between the two. Police then responded to a call in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to Dallas' WFAA news station.

According to police, the argument started after the woman, who Armstrong had been in a relationship with, saw texts from another woman on Armstrong's phone. Armstrong then demanded the keys to the apartment, which the victim gave. Shortly after, while he was on the phone with someone, Armstrong proceeded to hit her with the gun and then told her "I am going to shoot you." After the incident, police found the woman in a 7/11 parking lot waiting for her family to pick her up. She told police that she had been in an abusive relationship with Armstrong since September 2024, claiming he also strangled her but didn't report it because she didn't want him to get "into any trouble or cause him to lose his job."

Armstrong has been a member of the Mavericks staff as an assistant coach for the past 16 years. The team released the following statement on the case: "The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident. We take this matter seriously. The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. We will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing."
