Frances Tiafoe has been hit with a $120,000 fine by the ATP for his heated outburst during a match at the Shanghai Masters in October. The American tennis player was penalized for aggravated behavior and verbal abuse after a confrontation with the chair umpire during a final set tiebreak against Roman Safiullin.
The incident unfolded after Tiafoe was called for a time violation while preparing to serve. “No, no, no, no, I tossed the ball up,” Tiafoe argued, insisting he was within the rules. However, chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote stood firm, calling it a second serve.
Tiafoe eventually lost the match and directed a profanity-laden tirade at the umpire during the handshake, overshadowing Safiullin’s victory celebration. Spectators in the crowd reportedly laughed at the heated exchange.
The ATP issued a $60,000 fine for on-site misconduct and an additional $60,000 for aggravated behavior. Tiafoe, ranked world No. 18, later apologized, stating on Instagram, “That is not who I am and not how I want to treat people. I let my frustration in the heat of the moment get the best of me.”
Tiafoe’s fine serves as a reminder of the ATP’s stance on professional conduct, even in moments of intense competition.
