Raven Saunders, known for their unique style and fierce determination, once again turned heads during the shot put semifinals on Thursday. The U.S. star not only secured a spot in Friday’s final with a solid throw of 18.62 meters, placing fourth in their qualification group and seventh overall, but also made a statement with their striking fashion choice.

Saunders competed wearing a black face mask and vibrant visor sunglasses, an ensemble that quickly sparked conversation. The bold outfit, however, was more than just a fashion statement; it was a declaration of self-expression and a call to inspire others to embrace their individuality.

“I feel special trying to get the world more in tune and trying to give us and bring us more in our event,” Saunders shared after qualifying for the final. “It is one way to make me stand out, and I want to encourage other women—a lot of younger athletes are coming through, and they really push their own styles.”

Saunders emphasized that shot putters deserve the same recognition and spotlight as athletes in other events. “We have our own style; we can do things as big and bright as any sprinter, any jumper, whoever. So we deserve that spotlight as well,” they added.

This isn’t the first time Saunders has made a statement with their wardrobe. Over the years, they have become known for wearing various masks during competitions, each reflecting a different aspect of their personality. Their Instagram features posts from multiple events where they’ve sported masks inspired by characters like The Joker and the Hulk, the latter being a nod to Saunders' nickname, "Hulk."

As they head into Friday’s final, Saunders is in a strong mental state, drawing motivation from their past challenges and the support of those who stood by them. Reflecting on their journey, Saunders said, “When I made this team, it was for those people who reminded me who I was when I was down, when I was out, after I lost my mom, after a hip surgery—this was for them.”

The American athlete, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Games three years ago, now aims to top that achievement in Paris. With their unique blend of style and substance, Saunders continues to inspire and challenge the norms, proving that being true to oneself is the ultimate victory.
