‘The Piano Lesson’ , a 2024 film directed by Malcolm Washington, is not just a cinematic adaptation of August Wilson’s acclaimed play but a deeply personal project for the Washington family. Debuting at the Telluride Film Festival, this film marks Malcolm’s first studio feature, starring his brother John David Washington and produced by his sister Katia, with their father, Denzel Washington, co-producing.
The film is set in 1936 Pittsburgh and follows the Charles family as they grapple with a haunting family heirloom—a piano intricately carved by an enslaved ancestor. The narrative explores themes of legacy, identity, and family, resonating deeply with the Washingtons.

Malcolm dedicated the film to his mother, Pauletta, highlighting the familial significance of the project. Speaking about the experience, he emphasized how “personal” the movie felt, particularly due to the involvement of his closest family members. John David described working with his younger brother as a natural and fulfilling experience, recognizing Malcolm’s unique vision and leadership.

Denzel Washington’s deep connection to August Wilson’s work also infused the project. Having previously starred in and directed adaptations of Wilson’s plays, Denzel brought a sense of reverence and commitment to preserving Wilson’s legacy, which was evident throughout the production. His influence, though often behind the scenes, was felt profoundlyduring pivotal moments of the filming, especially during an intense exorcism scene filmed amidst a thunderstorm.

The film also features notable performances from Samuel L. Jackson and Danielle Deadwyler, with music composed by two-time Oscar-winner Alexandre Desplat. The cast and crew felt like a close-knit family, with Malcolm’s approach creating an atmosphere of warmth and collaboration on set

‘The Piano Lesson’ will have a limited theatrical release on November 8, 2024, before becoming available for streaming on Netflix on November 22, 2024, continuing the Washington family’s tradition of bringing August Wilson’s powerful narratives to the screen.
