Utah State University is mourning the loss of Andre Seldon Jr., a beloved football player who tragically died in an apparent cliff-diving accident. Seldon Jr., 22, was found by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team on the evening of Saturday, July 20, at Porcupine Reservoir. The university confirmed his passing on their official athletics website.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office in Logan detailed the incident, stating that deputies were dispatched to the dam at approximately 2:20 p.m. following reports of a possible drowning. Witnesses reported seeing a young man diving from cliffs into the water but not resurfacing. Lt. Tim Ramirez from the sheriff’s office confirmed that the initial investigation suggests it was a tragic accident. Multiple witnesses corroborated the same information, leading authorities to conclude it was an unfortunate mishap. The sheriff’s office extended heartfelt condolences to Seldon Jr.’s family and friends.

Seldon Jr. had recently transferred to Utah State and was preparing to start classes in the fall semester. He had spent the previous two seasons at New Mexico State University, where he played under Utah State’s interim head coach and defensive coordinator, Nate Dreiling. Before that, he played at the University of Michigan for two seasons. Seldon Jr. was a standout athlete during his high school years at Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan.

In a tribute on the college team’s website, Coach Dreiling expressed his sorrow, saying, “Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own. Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

Diana Sabau, Vice President and Director of Athletics at Utah State, also shared her sympathies, stating, “Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr. We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his
family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre.”

In light of this tragedy, Utah State University has provided emotional and mental support to its athletics staff and student-athletes. The community continues to honor Seldon Jr.’s memory and contributions both on and off the field, recognizing him as an exceptional individual and a valued teammate.
