Safaree Samuels and Nicki Minaj met in Queens, New York in 2000. The two were part of a rap group “Hoodstars” before exiting to work on their solo rap careers. Their love for Hiphop later led to a romatic relationship between the two. Nicki Minaj's career took off faster than Safarees after she signed a deal with Lil Wayne's Young Money Records. Safaree was a co-writer of songs like Pink Friday and Pink Friday… Roman Reloaded. He also appeared in someone Nicki Minaj's music videos in the early 2000's.

In 2014 the pair split and Safaree Samuels was spotted in October 2011, with his tattoos dedicated to Minaj all covered up. According to TMZ, Samuels claimed that he ended their relationship because he was “sick of being in the background” and was uncontrollably jealous of her success. This is after the pair seemed irritated at each other whenever they were spotted out in public. Nicki Minaj also accused Samuels of stealing her  credit cards, paying for prostitutes while they were still together as well as being over dependent on her. “I've done nothing but good for him…he asked me to take him with me to Atlanta… how dare you bite the hand that feeds you!!! He had a job in Atlanta for one day, he came back home and said that he didn't want to do that job… I said ‘don't worry I'll figure out a way to get the rent paid.’”

During a recent interview with “We in Miami” podcast, Safaree Samuels reflected on how Nicki Minaj's fan base “The Barbs” made his life miserable after their breakup. This is after he was asked about the biggest obstacle he experienced in his life and had to overcome. “Like I was with Nicki, we broke up so her fans and certain people, they just wanted it to be like okay, they're not together anymore, f*** him, let him be nothing, let him disintegrate, let him disappear whatever,” he said.

Safaree Samuels also went ahead to say that Nicki Minaj relationship with fellow rapper Meek Mill made everything difficult for him since they were considered the “power couple” in the music industry then. He also stated that everybody in the industry was against him and never wanted to “work” with him. He also claims that certain people are upset because of his success in terms of music and numerous TV shows.
