In a recent development, Raina Chassagne, the wife of rapper Tory Lanez, has filed for divorce. This move comes amidst Lanez's ongoing legal battle to overturn his conviction.
Raina Chassagne, 29, filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, who married on June 25, 2023, separated on June 1, 2024, less than a year after their union. Chassagne is seeking legal and physical custody of their 7-year-old son, Kai’lon Peterson.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during an incident in July 2020. He was convicted on December 23, 2022, of three felonies: assault with a semi-automatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The trial and subsequent conviction of Lanez have stirred a significant conversation about the treatment of Black women in society and the justice system. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón highlighted the need for society to do better for women, especially Black women, who are often not believed when they report crimes like assault.
Despite the conviction, Lanez's legal team, led by attorney Jose Baez, has expressed their intention to appeal the sentence, which they consider to be harsh and a result of Lanez's celebrity status. They argue that the sentence should be reconsidered, taking into account Lanez's role as a father and his personal history.
