In a bold move that intertwines the rich tapestry of Ukrainian folklore with contemporary storytelling, FILM.UA Group has announced the development of a live-action film based on the character Mavka, already celebrated in the animated feature “Mavka. The Forest Song.” The animated version, which has been showcased in 148 countries and grossed over $21 million globally, is just the beginning of a multiplatform, cross-media intellectual property.
The live-action adaptation aims to delve deeper into the intricate portrayal of the mythological character, promising a more mysterious and thrilling experience for audiences. Producer Anna Eliseeva has expressed the team’s desire to satisfy long-time fans and attract new ones, acknowledging that the live-action film will be a different entity from the animation.
Set against the backdrop of war-torn Ukraine, local filmmakers, including producer Iryna Kostyuk, have adapted to the challenges of filming amidst the pandemic and ongoing conflict. Their resilience is a testament to the nation’s spirit, as they stand on the cultural frontline, exporting Ukrainian culture and identity to the world—a direct counter to the erasure sought by external forces.
The character of Mavka has evolved into a cultural diplomat, making Ukrainian culture visible on the global stage. The live-action film will break free from previous PG restrictions, embracing darker, thriller-esque elements and an intense love affair at its core. The story revolves around the romance between Mavka and Lukyan, a biologist who discovers her in the forest. Their love story unfolds amidst dark forces that threaten to separate them.
The film’s narrative will explore the dual nature of Mavka, originally depicted as the souls of drowned young women who were both vengeful and dangerous. The live-action version will reflect this complexity, portraying Mavka as both a demonic force and a tender soul.
In addition to the live-action film, FILM.UA Group is developing an animated series in collaboration with France’s TeamTo and a lineup of new horror films, starting with “The Witch. Revenge,” currently in post-production. Another film, “The Dam,” features a female soldier fighting Soviet zombies, hinting at a potential crossover with The Witch.
These projects are unique in their combination of female characters with mythological backgrounds set against current events. “The Witch” seeks revenge on Russian soldiers, symbolizing the righteous rage of a nation under siege. Yet, the film’s message cautions against succumbing to darkness, emphasizing the importance of staying on the side of light.
The “Mavka” franchise’s expansion from animation to live-action and beyond signifies a creative endeavor that serves as a cultural statement. It showcases Ukraine’s resilience and artistic spirit, offering the world a glimpse Into the nation’s soul, one that is defined not by war but by the ability to create beautiful, enduring stories.
