In a significant legal development that has sent shockwaves through the Real Housewives of Potomac community, a federal judge has reportedly granted a motion for Dr. Wendy Osefo and her husband, Edward “Eddy” Osefo, to be tried separately in their ongoing wire fraud and conspiracy case. The ruling, handed down on March 6, 2026, marks a strategic shift in a legal battle that began with their indictment in late 2025.
The Osefos were originally charged as co-defendants following a multi-agency investigation into an alleged “professional services” scheme. Federal prosecutors claim the couple engaged in a conspiracy to defraud several business associates and financial institutions out of more than $1.5 million through falsified documents and shell companies related to their various business ventures, including Nneka’s Kitchen and several consulting firms.
The request for “severance”, the legal term for separating co-defendants’ trials, was filed by Dr. Wendy Osefo’s legal team earlier this year. Her attorneys argued that a joint trial would create “irreconcilable defenses,” suggesting that Wendy’s defense strategy may involve shifting responsibility or highlighting a lack of knowledge regarding specific financial transactions handled by her husband. By separating the trials, each defendant can present their case without the “spillover effect” of evidence that might only be admissible against the other.
“When a high-profile couple opts for separate trials, it usually means one party is preparing to argue they were an unwitting participant or were misled by the other,” says criminal defense expert Marcus Thorne. “For Wendy, a Johns Hopkins assistant professor and public figure, distancing her professional reputation from Eddy’s specific business dealings is likely her top priority.”
The prosecution had initially fought the motion, arguing that a single trial would be more efficient given that much of the evidence, including intercepted communications and bank records, involves both parties. However, the court ruled that the potential for “substantial prejudice” against Dr. Osefo outweighed the benefits of judicial economy.
Eddy Osefo’s trial is currently slated to begin in September 2026, with Wendy’s trial expected to follow in early 2027. Both have maintained their innocence, with Wendy recently stating on social media that she looks forward to “the truth coming to light.” Bravo, the network behind RHOP, has not commented on how the separate trial dates will impact the filming of the upcoming eleventh season.
