In a cover story for the Winter 2026 issue of Vanity Fair, multi-hyphenate star Teyana Taylor addressed her enduring and controversial friendship with Kanye West. Amid her own soaring success, including a recent Golden Globe win for her role in One Battle After Another, Taylor clarified why she refuses to sever ties with the rapper despite his history of polarizing remarks and public outbursts.
Speaking with interviewer Lindsey Underwood, Taylor framed her relationship with West through the lens of family loyalty rather than political or social endorsement. She explicitly stated that she does not have to agree with everything he says or does to remain his friend, comparing the situation to the unconditional bonds one holds with a sibling. “My brothers do shit that I don’t agree with,” she noted, emphasizing that a disagreement in values does not warrant abandonment.
This “big brother” dynamic has defined their relationship since Taylor first met him during his 2008 Glow in the Dark tour, eventually signing to his G.O.O.D. Music label in 2012. The interview highlights the inherent tension between Taylor’s personal gratitude and West’s public fallout. Her career reached a fever pitch after her iconic performance in West’s 2016 “Fade” music video, and she collaborated with him on her 2018 album K.T.S.E. While she has been vocal in the past about the frustrations regarding that project’s rollout, her personal affection for West appears unchanged.
Taylor emphasized that her loyalty is not “blind,” suggesting that their long-standing bond allows for a level of honesty that fair-weather associates might avoid. She explained that if West asks for her opinion, he knows he is going to get a “real answer,” implying that she provides direct feedback to him privately rather than joining the public chorus of condemnation.
The timing of Taylor’s comments is particularly noteworthy as she enters the 2026 awards season as a frontrunner for an Academy Award nomination. While some social media users suggest that her authentic defense of such a polarizing figure could be a public relations risk, Taylor remains focused on her own path. Beyond her film work, the piece details her life as a student at the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts and her close bond with West’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, with whom she stars in the legal drama All’s Fair.
