More than a decade after the Met Gala incident that shattered the aura of perfection surrounding Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Solange Knowles, fashion designer Oscar G. Lopez is finally revealing what he believes triggered the explosive elevator fight. Lopez, whose black lace gown Rachel Roy wore to the 2014 gala, says a simple compliment set off the chain reaction that became one of pop culture's most analyzed scandals.

"I think Jay-Z complimented her about the gown, and Beyoncé's sister felt it was not proper," Lopez, 52, told the Daily Mail, describing the moment he believes sparked "a kind of drama" between the trio. His account adds new context to the grainy surveillance footage showing Solange furiously shoving and kicking the rapper inside New York City's Standard Hotel after an afterparty at the Boom Boom Room.

At the time, Page Six sources reported that Solange had already exchanged tense words with Roy before the group entered the elevator, though the exact cause of their dispute remained unclear. Lopez now claims the compliment, delivered to Roy, who arrived late and missed the gala carpet entirely, was enough to ignite Solange's anger.

The leaked video dominated headlines, unintentionally thrusting Lopez's design into the spotlight. "The dress was all over the news," he recalled. "Any press is good press." Roy, long rumored to be connected to Jay-Z through past infidelity speculation, laughed off the uproar with Lopez, who dismissed the affair rumors as "silly," noting her history with Damon Dash, Jay-Z's former business partner and Roy's ex-husband.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z later indirectly addressed the turmoil through their music, with Beyoncé referencing "Becky with the good hair" in 2016's "Sorry" and Jay-Z acknowledging past cheating in his 2017 track "Family Feud." Roy only added fuel to the conversation when she captioned an Instagram post, "Good hair don't care," before insisting she'd been misunderstood.

Jay-Z, now 56, and Solange, 39, released a joint statement shortly after the incident, saying they had apologized and moved forward "as a united family." Still, Lopez's new account adds yet another layer to an altercation that continues to fascinate fans 11 years later.
