Oscar-nominated actor Taraji P. Henson is officially reuniting with Tyler Perry, joining the cast of his upcoming Netflix film “Why Did I Get Married Again?” — the third installment in his hit “Why Did I Get Married?” franchise.
Henson, who has worked with Perry on multiple projects over the years, including I Can Do Bad All By Myself, The Family That Preys, Acrimony, and this year’s Netflix success Straw, will star alongside the returning ensemble. Familiar faces confirmed for the sequel include Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, and Grammy-winning singer and actress Jill Scott.
Perry will once again wear multiple hats — writing, producing, directing, and reprising his role as one of the eight college friends at the heart of the story. The franchise has always revolved around a tight-knit group of couples navigating the complexities of love and marriage during their annual reunions, and the third chapter promises both nostalgia and fresh conflict.
According to Netflix, the new film’s logline sets the stage for both comedy and drama: “The couples reunite in celebration as Marcus (White) and Angela’s (Smith) daughter prepares to tie the knot. After being apart for quite some time, they learn quickly that as much as things change, they stay the same. Realizing their children have grown up to be so much like them, they must reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves that age-old question, why did they get married… again?”
Along with the returning veterans, the cast expands to include Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Da’Vinchi, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith, Derrick A. King, and Sydney Winbush. The film is currently in production on location in Italy, giving the reunion a glamorous international backdrop.
“Why Did I Get Married Again?” marks the latest project in Perry’s wide-ranging creative partnership with Netflix. The deal has already produced multiple streaming hits, including Madea’s Destination Wedding, Straw, and the recent Ruth & Boaz — a Bible- inspired romance co-produced with DeVon Franklin that quickly climbed Netflix’s global Top 10 movies list.
The original Why Did I Get Married? Premiered in 2007 and proved to be a box office hit, debuting at No. 1 in the U.S. before going on to earn $55.8 million worldwide. Its 2010 sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too?, outperformed it slightly with a $60.6 million global gross. Perry later extended the franchise into television with Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse, a spinoff sitcom centered on Marcus and Angela, which ran for six seasons across TBS and OWN.
In July, Perry teased the long-awaited threequel on Instagram, posting a photo of the “table draft” script’s cover page with the caption, “I’m just gonna sit this right here!” He tagged the franchise’s key players — including Janet Jackson, who co-starred in the first two films — but her name was notably absent from Netflix’s official cast announcement this week.
With Taraji P. Henson’s star power added to the mix, Perry’s latest installment in the Why Did I Get Married universe is set to continue the franchise’s legacy of heartfelt drama, sharp humor, and unflinching looks at the ups and downs of marriage.
