As Serena Williams turns 44, the tennis legend is once again making headlines, not for her dominance on the court, but for her candidness about health, recovery, and resilience. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion has revealed her experience with weight loss using a GLP-1 medication, an approach she turned to after struggling to reach her health goals following the births of her two daughters, Olympia and Adira.

Despite a lifetime of athleticism, Serena admitted that diet and exercise alone were not enough after her pregnancies. Initially hesitant about using medication, she reframed the challenge as if she were facing an opponent on the court, determined to meet it head-on. Since starting the treatment, she has lost 31 pounds, a transformation she chose to share publicly to normalize conversations about health and to inspire others to consider options that suit their circumstances.

Her openness is consistent with her history of addressing health struggles. Throughout her career, Serena battled numerous injuries, from ankle sprains and knee damage to playing with a torn Achilles tendon. In a 2022 article, she confessed that the sport had taken a toll on her body, leaving her with an intimate understanding of both physical endurance and vulnerability.

Beyond sports injuries, Serena has faced life-threatening health scares. In 2011, she suffered a pulmonary embolism, and in 2017, after giving birth to Olympia, her warnings to medical staff about similar symptoms were initially dismissed. She later discovered she had a blood clot in her lungs, requiring urgent intervention. Reflecting on that experience, Serena highlighted the alarming statistic that Black women in the United States are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, underscoring the urgent need for equity in healthcare.

Her advocacy extends beyond physical health. In recent years, Serena has used her platform to emphasize the importance of mental well-being. Sharing candidly about moments of exhaustion and the need to pause, she encouraged others to value rest and reconnection as vital parts of self-care.

Even after retiring from professional tennis, Serena remains a powerful voice in shaping conversations about health, representation, and resilience.
