Karen Huger, renowned as the "Grande Dame" of The Real Housewives of Potomac, was released from the Montgomery County Detention Center in Maryland on September 2, 2025, after serving six months of her one-year prison sentence for a high-profile DUI crash earlier this year.
The crash occurred in March 2024 when Huger lost control of her Maserati, hitting a street median and several signs near her Potomac home. Bodycam footage from her arrest captured her slurred speech, admission of intoxication and unusual remarks made to law enforcement. In December 2024, a jury convicted her on multiple counts, including DUI, DWI, negligent driving and other traffic violations, though she was found not guilty of reckless driving.
During her February 2025 sentencing, the court handed her a two-year prison term, suspending one year in exchange for five years of probation. She was also ordered to pay fines totaling $2,900, given a one-year driving ban, and required to install a breathalyzer interlock device in any future vehicle.
Huger’s early release came as a result of good behavior and participation in treatment programs during her incarceration. Sources close to the reality star say the time behind bars gave her a period of reflection and growth. Huger has previously acknowledged how sobering the experience has been and has spoken about her commitment to ongoing self-improvement.
Upon her release, cameras captured Huger waving to onlookers and appearing emotional as she left the facility. Reports confirmed that Bravo’s film crew was present to document her transition back to life outside prison, suggesting that her journey could be featured in the upcoming season of The Real Housewives of Potomac.
Throughout her imprisonment, the RHOP community and her fellow castmates expressed their support. Gizelle Bryant, Candiace Dillard Bassett, and Ashley Darby were among those who offered encouragement, emphasizing their hope for Huger’s healing and successful return to the show.
Karen Huger now faces life under probationary terms, with strict driving restrictions and ongoing monitoring, but she is once again free. As the Grande Dame steps into her next chapter, her focus appears to be on accountability, personal growth and reconnecting with both her family and her loyal fan base.
