Snoop Dogg has admitted that a trip to the cinema with his grandson left him feeling unsettled after watching Disney-Pixar’s _Lightyear_. Speaking on the _It’s Giving_ podcast, the 53-year-old recalled how the 2022 animated film, a spin-off from _Toy Story_, sparked unexpected questions from the young boy. The movie features the character Alisha Hawthorne, voiced by Uzo Aduba, who is shown in a same-sex marriage and raising a child with her partner.

During the screening, Snoop’s grandson turned to him confused. “Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She a woman,” he asked. The rapper admitted he was caught off guard. “Oh s---. I didn’t come here for this s---. I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” he remembered thinking.

Snoop said he tried to steer the child back to the film. “Hey man, watch the movie,” he told him. But his grandson wasn’t letting it go: “They just said, she and she had a baby. They’re both women. How did she have a baby?” Snoop recalled eventually shushing him with some popcorn.

Looking back on the moment, he said it left him unsure how to handle such conversations. “It’s like, I’m scared to go to the movies now. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s--- that I don’t have an answer for,” he explained. “It threw me for a loop. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Lightyear_ caused controversy when it was released, with bans in several countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Kuwait because of its LGBTQ+ storyline. In the U.S., one Oklahoma theater even put up signs warning about the same-sex kiss, saying it would skip the scene.

Disney originally cut the kiss from the film, but after backlash from staff and supporters, the company reinstated it. Chris Evans, who voiced Buzz Lightyear, spoke out in support at the time. “That representation across the board is how we make films… it’s an honour to be a part of something that is taking those steps,” he told _Variety_.

While Snoop questioned whether such storylines belong in children’s films, LGBTQ+ groups point out that representation is still limited. A GLAAD report in 2025 showed that only two children’s movies released the previous year included queer characters, and those roles lasted less than a minute each.
