Love Island USA producers have suddenly announced that 25‑year‑old contestant Cierra Ortega had exited the Fijian villa due to a “personal situation.” Viewers quickly connected the dots, that is, a resurfaced social media posts from 2023 revealed Ortega using an anti‑Asian slur to describe her eyes during a Botox session, triggering widespread backlash and online petitions for her removal.
Two days later, Ortega broke her silence in what she called an “accountability video.” She apologized to the Asian community, explaining she had “no idea the word held as much pain, as much harm,” but acknowledged that “intent doesn’t excuse ignorance.” Though she denied knowing it was a slur at the time, she removed the post once informed and vowed to educate herself and others.
This incident marks the second removal for racism in Love Island USA Season 7, following Yulissa Escobar’s exit earlier this season. Producers maintained Ortega’s departure was due to a “personal situation,” but Ortega publicly confirmed that breaking the show’s standards on racism was at the core.
In addition to her own apology, Ortega spoke candidly about the toll the backlash had taken on her and her family reportedly including death threats and even ICE calls saying, “There’s no need to fight hate with hate.”
After Ortega’s departure from the villa, her parents took over her Instagram Stories to address the public response. They wrote, “We’re not here to justify or ignore what’s surfaced. We understand why people are upset, and we know accountability matters. But what’s happening online right now has gone far beyond that. The threats. The cruel messages. The attacks on her family, her friends, even her supporters—it’s heartbreaking. It’s uncalled for. And no one deserves that kind of hate, no matter what mistake they’ve made.”
They continued writing, *While she’ll always be our little girl, she’s also a woman, one who will take responsibility in her own time and her own voice. Until then, we’re simply asking for compassion. For patience. For basic human decency. Not just for her, but for everyone caught in the middle of this.”
