The Tampa born rapper Doechii becomes the 3 rd woman to win in the rap album of the year category. The other two women were the Bronx rapper, Cardi B and the legendary Miss Lauryn Hill. Lauryn Hill was the first ever woman to take home the award for Best Rap Album for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1999. Doechii’s album “Alligator’s bites never heal” had tracks that became an online sensation on platforms such as TikTok.
Doechii graced the stage in a custom Thom Browne number, a designer that has been supportive of her since her rise as an emcee to watch in recent years. The best rap album of the year had exceptional artists like J Cole with “Might Delete Later”, Common & Pete with “The Auditorium, vol. 2”, Eminem with “The death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)” and Future & Metro Boomin with “We don’t trust you.”
“I don’t wanna make this long but this category was introduced in 1989 and only two women have won— Lauryn Hill — wait, three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii!” the rapper began her speech. “I put my heart and my soul into this mixtape—I went through so much and I dedicated myself to sobriety and God told me I would be rewarded and he would show me just how good it can get.”
Doechii concluded her speech with a word of encouragement for all black girls. “I know there’s some Black girl—so many Black women—watching me right now. And I wanna tell you, you can do it,” she said through tears. “Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, that tell you, you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be, to be right where you are and I am a testimony!”
