In her petition, Megan alleges Lanez, 32, uses individuals, including bloggers, to spread false and defamatory information about her and the shooting. The document, obtained by Billboard, states: “Mr. Peterson's attempts to retraumatize and revictimize Ms. Pete recognize no limits even while he is behind bars.” Megan’s legal team accuses Lanez of trying to distort the truth to fuel harmful narratives against her while appealing his conviction.
Megan has also filed a separate lawsuit against blogger Elizabeth Milagro Cooper, whom she describes as Lanez’s "puppet and mouthpiece." Her lawyers claim to have evidence of financial ties between Lanez's father and Cooper, with payments totaling $3,000 between October 2020
and March 2022. Megan argues that the previous protective order issued against Lanez is no longer in effect and is requesting a new one. A
hearing on the restraining order is set for January 9.
The 2020 shooting incident has been highly publicized, with Megan naming Lanez as her shooter in an emotional Instagram Live in August 2020. She revealed that fear of police aggression initially stopped her from reporting Lanez as the gunman. “I didn’t want to die. I didn’t want the police to shoot me because there’s a man with a gun in thecar with me,” Megan said, explaining her hesitancy to tell officersthe full story at the scene.
Although Lanez was initially arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, it wasn’t until October 2020 that he was charged with felony assault and gun offenses. During his legal battle, he was placed under house arrest for an unrelated altercation with singer August Alsina. Lanez was ultimately sentenced for the shooting nearly three years later, marking the conclusion of a case that has drawn significant public and legal scrutiny.
