The award recognizes “phenomenal efforts by individuals in film and television who captivated global audiences.” Zendaya received the honor for her standout performance as Tashi Duncan, a competitive tennis player, in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers.
Dressed in an elegant Louis Vuitton white halter-neck sheath dress with an open back, Zendaya took the stage to deliver an emotional speech. “To my mom — my mom’s here tonight; she’s embarrassed,” she said with a smile, expressing gratitude for her unwavering support.
Zendaya extended her thanks to the people behind the scenes who made her journey possible. "Without all of them, none of this is possible,” she shared. “My character is only an amalgamation of the beautiful ideas of the amazing, creative people around me.” She acknowledged filmmakers, producers, and costume, hair, and makeup teams for their contributions.
Challengers, which also stars Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, has garnered critical acclaim since its release in April 2024. The film, written by Justin Kuritzkes, was nominated for Best Feature at the Gotham Awards, while its composers, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, received Grammy nods for Best Soundtrack Score.
Zendaya praised her co-stars and Kuritzkes for crafting the bold and complex character of Tashi. “I’m grateful that you allowed me to be her,” she said. She also expressed admiration for director Guadagnino, calling his work “visionary” and commending his empathetic approach to storytelling.
Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, hailed Zendaya as “magnetic,” citing her performances in Dune: Part One, Dune: Part Two, and Euphoria as evidence of her status as one of her generation's most captivating actors.
As Zendaya prepares to return for Season 3 of her Emmy-winning role in HBO’s Euphoria, she continues to expand her impressive career. She will also star alongside Tom Holland in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film.
The Gotham Awards highlight independent filmmakers and creators, recognizing groundbreaking work. This year’s Best Feature contenders include Challengers, Anora, Babygirl, A Different Man, and Nickel Boys.
