Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is stepping back into the role of Maui for Disney's live-action Moana, bringing his signature charm—and a little help from Hollywood magic. Speaking with Extra, Johnson, 52, revealed that his impressive on-set physique as Maui is a blend of his own fitness and a custom-made bodysuit.
“That suit took a long time to put on,” Johnson admitted, referring to the larger-than-life look captured in recent set photos. “I’m glad you thought I bulked up—it means you couldn’t tell it’s a suit!” The former pro wrestler first voiced the demigod in the 2016 animated Moana and reprises the role for the live-action version, set to release in 2026.
Transforming into Maui for the live-action adaptation required hours of preparation each day, Johnson shared. The production team went to great
lengths to keep his costume under wraps during outdoor shoots. However, photos of him wearing traditional Hawaiian attire, including a grass skirt and Maui's iconic tribal tattoos, were snapped by photographers from boats.
Despite the challenges, Johnson found the experience deeply meaningful, particularly because of the personal connection he has with the
character. “My grandfather inspired Maui, so stepping into this role feels like stepping into his skin,” he said. “It’s real,flesh-and-blood now, and that makes it different.”
Filming in Hawaii also felt like a homecoming for Johnson, who reflected on his childhood in the islands. “My daughters were there, my mom was
there. It was the first time all of us were together in a public place,” he said, calling the moment “beautiful.”
Johnson joked about the similarities between himself and Maui, describing them both as “egotistical, loud, and with a big mouth.” Still, he emphasized his connection to the character. “I know who Maui is—I know his voice, his spirit, his inspiration. It’s something I can access easily.”
The live-action Moana will also feature newcomer Catherine Laga'aia as the titular character, with original Moana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho serving as an executive producer. Tony-winning director Thomas Kail helms the project.
Before the remake hits theaters on July 10, 2026, fans can look forward to Moana 2, set to release on Nov. 27. Johnson’s excitement for the project is palpable: “I can’t wait for everyone to see it—it’s going to be special.”
