Investigation Discovery (ID) is set to premiere a new documentary titled “Chris Brown: A History of Violence” on October 27, 2024. This documentary is part of ID’s No Excuse for Abuse campaign, which aims to raise awareness about domestic violence and provide support to survivors.
Over his two-decade career, Chris Brown has been a chart-topping rap star, despite a litany of legal troubles that began with his 2009 arrest for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna. The documentary will delve into Brown’s history of legal issues, including allegations of intimate-partner violence, assault charges, and even sexual assault. It will feature commentary from experts and advocates, and a new accuser will come forward in the film.
The documentary, produced by Ample Entertainment, promises to expose the impact of a cycle of abuse dating back to Brown’s childhood. It will explore how a troubled pop artist with such an infamous public record can maintain his superstar status and legions of fans. The film aims to provide thoughtful reflections on each survivor’s experience and the psychological destruction in the aftermath of their abuse.
Following the premiere, Sunny Hostin, co-host of The View, will lead a discussion with experts on intimate partner violence. Hostin, a former prosecutor, emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue and advocating for change. “Domestic violence is a very close, personal issue to me as I reflect on my past as a prosecutor of these types of cases, and in my role as a mother and public figure whose actions inform and help shape the next generation,” Hostin said in a statement.
The documentary Is part of ID’s third annual No Excuse for Abuse campaign, now in its third year in partnership with the No More Foundation. This campaign aims to shed light on the dynamics of intimate-partner violence with programming and resources. “ID is dedicated to empowering individuals and communities through its programming and campaigns,” ID president Jason Sarlanis said in a statement. “Our annual No Excuse for Abuse campaign amplifies this message, providing resources to show survivors and their loved ones that they are not alone and that help is available”.
The premiere of the Brown documentary follows the recent arrest and criminal charges brought against fellow rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is now in jail awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Combs will also be the subject of an upcoming ID docuseries set for a 2025 release.
“Chris Brown: A History of Violence” aims to provide a comprehensive look at the singer’s troubled past and the ongoing impact of his actions. By highlighting the stories of survivors and the psychological toll of abuse, the documentary seeks to foster a deeper understanding of intimate-partner violence and encourage societal change.
