Future’s musical journey in 2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary. With his latest release, “Mixtape Pluto,” the rapper has achieved a remarkable feat by securing his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart within just six months. This accomplishment places him in the elite company of the Beatles, who last achieved a similar milestone in 1965-66.
“Mixtape Pluto” debuted with 129,000 equivalent album units, with streaming playing a significant role, contributing to a robust 156.62 million streams. This album is particularly notable as it is the first of Future’s three No. 1 albums this year to be released solely under his name. His previous chart-toppers, “We Don’t Trust You” and “We Still Don’t Trust You,” were collaborative efforts with Metro Boomin.
In contrast, Katy Perry’s latest album, “143,” debuted at No. 6 with 48,000 units. While her album sales were strong, accounting for 37,500 units, streaming numbers were relatively lower, with 13.11 million on-demand listens. Despite a well-received performance at the MTV VMAs and the release of multiple vinyl and digital variants, Perry’s singles from the album struggled to make a significant impact on the charts.
The only other new album to debut in the top 10 was Lil Tecca’s “Plan A,” which entered at No. 9 with 42,000 equivalent album units. This marks his fourth album to make the top 10 and his biggest weekly tally since 2019.
The rest of the top 10 saw returning entries, led by Chappell Roan’s “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” which climbed to No. 2 with a 64% increase in units, largely due to special one-year anniversary vinyl editions. Other notable entries included Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet” at No. 3, Post Malone’s country album at No. 4, Morgan Wallen at No. 5, Taylor Swift at No. 7, Billie Eilish at No. 8, and Noah Kahan at No. 10.
Future’s achievement of three No. 1 albums in such a short span is a testament to his popularity and prolific output. As the year progresses, it will be interesting to see if he continues to dominate the charts and set new records. Meanwhile, Katy Perry’s journey with “143” highlights the evolving dynamics of album sales and streaming in the music industry.
