Cardi B has confirmed she is expecting her third child, just as news broke of her filing for divorce from husband Offset. The 31-year-old Grammy winner made the announcement on Instagram on August 1, 2024, sharing photos of herself in a red gown that prominently displayed her baby bump.
"With every ending comes a new beginning!" Cardi wrote in her caption, pointedly omitting any mention of Offset. The post came on the heels of divorce papers filed by the rapper, seeking primary custody of the couple's two children together - daughter Kulture, 6, and son Wave, 2½.
A representative for Cardi B confirmed to PEOPLE that the divorce was not based on infidelity rumors, stating it had been "a long time coming." This marks the couple's second divorce filing, following a previous attempt in September 2020 that was later called off.
The pregnancy announcement took fans by surprise, as speculation had only recently begun after Cardi was spotted with a noticeable bump while filming in New York City. In her Instagram post, the rapper reflected on the challenges and joys of motherhood, writing, "It's so much easier taking life's twists, turns and tests laying down, but you, your brother and your sister have shown me why it's worth it to push through!"
Cardi's relationship with Offset has been tumultuous since their secret marriage in September 2017. The couple has weathered multiple cheating scandals and separations, with Cardi addressing their rocky romance in a 2020 ELLE interview: "There's a lot of love, there's a lot of passion, there's a lot of trust, there's a big friendship. It's always us against the world."
The timing of the pregnancy announcement and divorce filing has left fans speculating about the future of the couple's relationship. Offset, 32, is also father to three children from previous relationships.
In December 2023, Cardi first hinted at trouble in paradise during an Instagram Live, revealing she had been single "for a minute now" but was unsure how to break the news to her followers. Despite this admission, the couple continued to make public appearances together, including attending a Knicks game in May 2024.
As news of the pregnancy and divorce spreads, the music industry and fans alike are watching closely to see how these developments will impact Cardi B's career. The rapper has been vocal about the challenges of balancing motherhood with her music, telling Rolling Stone in May 2024, "My kids come first. My kids come before anything."
