On July 27, she responded to a TikTok video by Marissa Barrionuevo, a personal assistant in a Florida plastic surgeon's office, who had posted side-by-side photos of Selena, prompting online theories about her undergoing cosmetic procedures.
"Honestly, I hate this. I was on stripes because of flare up. I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone." Selena commented Marissa’s video displayed photos of Selena from years ago and at the 2023 Golden Globes but did not speculate on any changes. Marissa stated, "I think she’s been through so much in her life, especially medically related, so I don’t think it’s fair to speculate whether or not she’s gotten cosmetic things done. At the end of the day, let’s just leave her be."
Marissa apologized for any offense caused, saying, "I adore you. I really do mean the best, so I apologize if this rubbed you the wrong way in any way whatsoever." She added, "You don’t owe it to anyone to tell us why you don’t look the same as when you did when you were a teenager or in your twenties."
Selena responded to Marissa’s apology video, saying, "I love you. Not about you. I just get sad sometimes."
Selena was diagnosed with lupus in 2014. The disease causes symptoms like joint pain during flares, which are periods of increased disease activity.
