Bassett’s reaction to the announcement went viral, as she did not stand or clap like the other nominees. Looking back, she acknowledged her disappointment, stating, “I found it interesting. Interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving.”

The veteran actress emphasized that her reaction was not about refusing to celebrate others but rather a reflection of her dedication and belief in her work. “I love applauding people,” she explained. “But in that moment… No, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given.”

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2024, Bassett described her reaction as one of being “gobsmacked,” adding, “Of course—a supreme disappointment. And disappointment is human.” She acknowledged the reality of setbacks but stressed the importance of moving forward. “We’re going to smile, we’re going to be gracious, we’re going to be kind, we’re going to party anyway.”

Despite the loss, Bassett’s career achievements were recognized when she received an honorary Academy Award at the 2024 ceremony. In her acceptance speech, she paid tribute to fellow Black actresses such as Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Lupita Nyong’o, and Regina King, while noting that Halle Berry remains the only Black woman to have won Best Actress.

“To my fellow Black actresses, fill your hearts with courage and strength, because regardless of what you may think or see or feel, your contributions do matter,” Bassett said. “Take comfort knowing that your performances have given hope, offered a different perspective and, for others, just pure joy in a time of need.” She concluded her speech with a call for change in the industry: “This honor isn't just for or about me. What I hope this moment means is that we are taking the necessary steps toward a future in which it is the norm, not the exception, to see and embrace one another’s full humanity, stories, and perspectives. This must be our goal.”

Currently, Bassett stars in the Netflix thriller _Zero Day_ alongside Robert De Niro, further cementing her legacy as one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors.
