Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi first shared news of their engagement in April 2023, and the 20-year-old "Stranger Things" star recently recounted the unique proposal on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon.
Brown, 20, detailed how Bongiovi, 22, proposed underwater, a setting that reflects a shared passion. “Jake and I bonded over diving. We love diving, we got our diving licenses together,” she said. The proposal took place during one of their dives, with Bongiovi presenting Brown with a shell. “He gives me like a shell and I like, turn it over and it’s a ring,” Brown described, mimicking Bongiovi’s underwater communication.
Brown acknowledged the proposal might have seemed underwhelming at first. “So I was like okay,’” she said, making the okay gesture, “and I think it was underwhelming, but we freaked out.” The excitement turned dramatic when the ring slipped off her finger and began to plummet. “As I go to show him, the ring falls off my finger, plummets like, so fast, it was like a cinematic movie,” Brown said.
Displaying his devotion, Bongiovi executed a daring deep dive to retrieve the ring. “Jake threw himself, like so deep, like the diver was like, ‘You can’t do that, like your ears … literally your brain will explode.’” His determination and quick action are emblematic of their relationship, Brown explained. “It’s a reflection of who he is, and I feel like we’re always going to have each other’s back and if anyone drops the ball, we got it.”
Despite their young age, the couple has the support of Bongiovi’s father, legendary rocker Jon Bon Jovi. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live” in May 2023, Bon Jovi expressed his belief in their relationship. “I don’t know if age matters,” he said. “You know, if you find the right partner and you grow together, I think that would be my advice really, is growing together is wise.” He added that all his children have found partners they believe they can grow with and that the family is supportive of these choices.
