Angel Reese has issued an apology to her Chicago Sky teammates after comments she made about the roster drew criticism. Following the Sky's win over the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday, Sept. 3, the 23-year-old forward addressed remarks published by the Chicago Tribune that suggested she questioned her teammates' ability to win and hinted she might leave the team if things did not improve.
Reese acknowledged the report and admitted, "I probably am frustrated with myself right now." She explained that her words had been taken out of context and clarified that she never intended to disparage her teammates. "I really didn't intentionally mean to put down my teammates, because they've been through this with me throughout the whole year," she said.
The All-Star emphasized the commitment and effort her fellow players have shown, noting that they have "busted their ass" alongside her and consistently supported her both on and off the court. "They've showed up for me through thick and thin, and in the locker room when nobody could see anything," she added.
Reese went on to apologize directly, saying she had already spoken to her teammates privately about how the article misrepresented what she meant. She acknowledged she has "to be better" with her choice of words in interviews. "I know it's not the message, it's the messenger, and understanding what I say can be taken any kind of way. So, I just have to really be better and grow from this," she said.
The controversy stemmed from a Sept. 3 article in which Reese was quoted expressing her desire for roster improvements. "I am very vocal about what we need and what I want. I'd like to be here for my career, but if things don't pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do what's best for me," she reportedly told the Tribune. The piece was published just one day after Reese announced she would make her film debut alongside Idris Elba.
Reese also commented on her team's struggles during the season, stating that she was "not settling for the same we did this year" and stressing the importance of adding stronger talent to the roster. "We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That's a non-negotiable for me," she said, making it clear that she wants to help the franchise bring in top talent during the offseason.
