Authorities in Zanzibar are investigating the death of Miami-based lifestyle influencer Ashlee Jenae, who was found dead in a luxury hotel villa during a trip intended to celebrate her 31 st birthday and recent engagement. While initial reports from local police pointed toward suicide, the 31-year-old’s family and friends have launched a public campaign to reject that finding, calling the circumstances of her passing “suspicious.”

The incident occurred at the Zuri Zanzibar resort, where Jenae, legal name Ashly Robinson, was vacationing with her fiancé, Joe McCann, the founder of the crypto- focused hedge fund Asymmetric. According to North Unguja Regional Police Commander Benedict Mapujira, the couple had been involved in a “blowout” dispute shortly before her death. The altercation was reportedly significant enough for hotel staff to intervene and separate the couple into different rooms.

Following the dispute, Jenae was found unresponsive in her villa on Friday, April 10, 2026. McCann reportedly told Tanzanian authorities that she had died by suicide via hanging. While local police initially leaned toward this narrative, they have since clarified that the investigation remains active and no official final ruling on the cause of death has
been issued.

The influencer’s family has been vocal in their skepticism of the suicide claim. In a statement to media outlets, Jenae’s father, Harry Robinson, emphasized that the family is working with the U.S. Embassy and a funeral director to uncover the truth. Close friends, including PR executive Savannah Britt, have also taken to social media to demand justice, arguing that Jenae’s vibrant personality and her recent joyful posts about her engagement make a self-inflicted death highly unlikely. “Anyone who knows Ash knows she would never,” Britt wrote in a viral post.

Adding to the scrutiny are unverified reports regarding the timeline of events. Family supporters have questioned why there was a perceived delay in notifying them of her passing and why certain social media activity continued during the window in which she was reportedly found.

As of April 14, 2026, Zanzibar officials are continuing to review forensic evidence and witness statements from the resort staff. For the thousands of followers who tracked Jenae’s lifestyle and fashion content, the case has become a focal point of concern regarding the safety and legal protections for travelers abroad. While Joe McCann has not been charged with any crime, the intense public pressure for a transparent  investigation continues to mount as her family awaits the results of a formal autopsy.
