As the 2024 presidential race takes shape, calls are mounting for Maya Rudolph to reprise her Emmy-winning portrayal of Vice President Kamala Harris on "Saturday Night Live." The clamor intensified after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection, throwing his support behind Harris as the Democratic nominee.
Rudolph, who earned critical acclaim for her "SNL" appearances as Harris during the 2020 election cycle, expressed surprise at the renewed interest. "It was wild!" she told Variety. "My phone hasn't stopped blowing up."
The comedian's popularity stems from her spot-on impersonation of Harris, which she debuted in 2019 during a mock town hall sketch. Introducing herself as "America's cool aunt. A fun aunt. I call that a 'funt,'" Rudolph captured Harris' confident swagger and winning smile.
Her portrayal resonated with viewers and critics alike. In December 2019, Rudolph won an Emmy for her performance in a cold open parodying a Democratic debate. Channeling Lizzo's "Truth Hurts," she sang: "You coulda had a bad bitch."
As "SNL" gears up for its milestone 50th season premiere on September 28, speculation is rife about Rudolph's potential return. While NBC has not confirmed any casting decisions, the show's history of political satire suggests Harris will likely feature prominently.
Rudolph's possible comeback coincides with a banner year for the versatile performer. She recently garnered four Emmy nominations for her work on three different shows: "Loot," "Big Mouth," and "SNL." The recognition spans categories including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
"I believe my reaction was, 'Holy shit!'" Rudolph said of the nominations. "And all for things that are so close to my heart."
Beyond her "SNL" appearances, Rudolph continues to make waves in the entertainment industry. Her Apple TV+ series "Loot," which follows a billionaire divorcée's philanthropic adventures, was recently renewed for a third season. The show has allowed Rudolph to showcase her range as both an actor and executive producer.
Audiences eagerly await Rudolph's potential return to Studio 8H. Whether she'll don Harris' signature pearls and power suits remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Maya Rudolph's comedic talents continue to captivate viewers across multiple platforms.
