Tina Charles has announced her retirement from professional basketball, closing the chapter on a distinguished 14-year career in the WNBA where she became the league's all-time leading rebounder.

The 37-year-old finishes her career with 4,262 rebounds and 8,396 points, ranking second on the WNBA's all-time scoring list behind Diana Taurasi. Her consistency and production over more than a decade established her as one of the most accomplished players in league history.

In a statement, Charles reflected on her decision to step away from the game, noting that it came from a place of self-awareness and personal growth. She explained that recognizing when it is time to move in a new direction is part of evolving both professionally and personally.

A native of Queens, Charles entered the league as the first overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, selected by the Connecticut Sun. Her rise to the top began in college at the University of Connecticut, where she won two national championships and established herself as one of the top prospects in the country.

She made an immediate impact in the WNBA, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2010. Two years later, she was named the league's Most Valuable Player. Over the course of her career, she was selected as an All-Star eight times, reinforcing her reputation as one of the league's elite talents.

Charles played for several teams throughout her career, including the New York Liberty, Washington Mystics, Phoenix Mercury, Seattle Storm, and Atlanta Dream. Although she did not secure a WNBA championship, her international career added to her legacy.

With United States women's national basketball team, Charles won three Olympic gold medals and three World Cup titles, highlighting her success on the global stage.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praised Charles for her remarkable career, describing her as a model of excellence and consistency. She noted that Charles' achievements, from Rookie of the Year to MVP to becoming the league's all-time leading rebounder, have left a lasting mark on the sport.

As she steps away from professional basketball, Charles leaves behind a legacy defined by durability, dominance, and impact that will continue to influence the game for years to come.
