Kim Kardashian says she is willing to overlook painful moments in her relationship with Kanye West if it means their four children can continue spending time with their father.
In Jonathan Van Meter's biography, Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future, the reality star opened up about the difficulties of raising children with her ex-husband, admitting that she still worries about him despite their strained relationship.
"I still make up stories and protect [the kids] because I want them to think their dad is the greatest," Kardashian said.
The former couple share North, 13, Saint, 10, Chicago, 8, and Psalm, 7. Kardashian said West visits only occasionally and that she sometimes communicates with him through his wife, Bianca Censori, or his manager.
Despite their history, she continues to invite West to spend time with the children at her home, even offering to leave so they can have time together comfortably.
Last Christmas, she asked him to stay over on Christmas Eve and bring Censori so the family could celebrate together. She intends to make the same offer again.
"I will sweep everything under the rug, all the horrible things he has said about me, so that the kids can see their father," she said.
Kardashian, who finalised her divorce from West in November 2022, said she tries to keep the difficulties between them away from their children. She acknowledged that her therapist has encouraged her to strengthen her boundaries, but said the pair have managed to co-parent "without too much conflict."
Their communication is limited, she explained, although they hug when they meet. She also maintains a close relationship with his family and welcomes them to visit, have dinner and spend time with the children.
However, the arrangement has not eased her concerns about West's wellbeing.
"Oh, I worry about him all day. All the time. That's the father of my kids, I'll never not worry about him," Kardashian said. "And that's a big burden of having kids with someone who you don't necessarily get along with."
She added that West's struggles make her sad and that she is uncertain whether his situation will improve. "He always seems to pick himself up ... and out of something, but it does make me so sad. And I don't think it's going to get better. I pray it does. For my kids," she said.
Kardashian also described efforts to shield the children from West's public controversies and personal struggles. She said her household understands what to do when she declares a "lockdown," including turning off television and radio broadcasts so the children are not exposed to current events.
