Lizzo is speaking candidly about her body, her health journey, and the pressures women face in the spotlight.

In a new interview with The Guardian, the 38-year-old singer revealed she has gained 20 pounds since last year, while stressing that weight fluctuation is normal for her.

"I've gained 20 pounds since last year, so everyone can ask me about weight gain, too, if they'd like," Lizzo said. She explained that her focus on wellness began in 2023 for several reasons, including joint pain and the need to step away from the internet.

"All I had was the studio and my thoughts, so I poured myself into the things I could control. My body, my lifestyle, my routines and habits. So, yeah, both of those things are true. And this is who I am today."

The Grammy winner noted that while she reached a weight goal in January 2025, she expected her body to fluctuate. "Will my body fluctuate from this size? Will I get a little smaller depending on some of the choices I make or a little bigger depending on some of the choices I make in my life? Yes, I'm used to fluctuating."

Beyond her own journey, Lizzo criticized the relentless societal pressure on women's appearances. "There's a system of oppression that is constantly putting pressure on, especially women and especially women in the spotlight," she said. "It won't stop until you've bought every product and you've bought into every lie and turned it in on yourself. That system is working at an all-time high right now."

She talked about how cruelty has become part of everyday culture. In her view, people now compete to leave the harshest comments, and negativity often gets rewarded instead of discouraged. She sees this trend stretching from leaders at the top all the way down to online comment sections, where being cruel has become normal and even fashionable. To her, the level of cruelty today feels higher than ever.

Despite the scrutiny, Lizzo has stayed true to body positivity. For her, body positivity is about daring to exist openly and proudly in a world that once told her she shouldn't.
