Malia and Sasha Obama made a rare public appearance alongside their parents, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, during the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on Thursday, June 18.

The sisters joined their parents on stage as the family celebrated the official opening of the landmark development on Chicago's South Side. The expansive campus features a presidential museum, concert and event spaces, landscaped public parks, and a new branch of the Chicago Public Library.

The appearance marked one of the few times the Obama daughters have attended a high profile public event since leaving the White House nearly a decade ago. Both Malia, 27, and Sasha, 25, have largely chosen to live private lives, making only occasional appearances in family photos shared by their parents during holidays and birthdays.

While public outings have been rare, Sasha was spotted earlier this year at the NBA All Star Game in Inglewood, California, where she attended alongside her parents.

Malia has focused on building a career in the entertainment industry, stepping into filmmaking and screenwriting. She has collaborated with actor and filmmaker Donald Glover on projects including the Amazon Prime series Swarm, while also making her directorial debut with the short film The Heart.

Released under the professional name Malia Ann, the 18 minute film earned recognition on the international festival circuit. It was selected for the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, and the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Speaking about the project in 2024, Malia said the film explores themes of loss, loneliness, forgiveness, regret, and human connection.

"The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret, but I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in those things," she said. "We hope you enjoy the film and it makes you feel a bit less lonely, or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are."

Her work continued to receive international recognition when she attended the 50th Deauville American Film Festival in France in September 2024. During the event, she received the Young Spirit Award in recognition of The Heart.

The Obama Presidential Center opening not only celebrated a major milestone for Barack and Michelle Obama but also offered supporters a rare glimpse of the entire family together at a public event.
