Idris Elba says he’s preparing for life behind the camera. Speaking at the Red Sea International Film Festival on December 10, the 53-year-old actor confirmed that while he isn’t ready to walk away just yet, he does envision a future where directing becomes his full-time creative
path. The revelation came during a festival Q&A, where Elba discussed his evolving artistic ambitions and the growing satisfaction he finds  in shaping stories from behind the lens.

Elba explained that he still loves acting but feels directing taps “slightly different muscles,” allowing him to engage with a production in a more expansive way. His appearance in Jeddah was tied to Dust to Dreams, his new short film starring musician Seal, marking his second major directorial project after 2018’s Yardie. He told attendees he hopes longtime fans won’t resent his shift, noting that he plans to “eventually” transition entirely to directing.

The festival also offered Elba a moment to reflect on broader intellectual interests. He shared that he sometimes feels like “an imposter in the political arena,” and may formally study human science to strengthen the activism and philanthropy work he participates in. For him, the connection between leadership and humanity is central: “Humans respond to humans,” he said, adding that he wants deeper academic grounding in how people relate to one another.

Elba also spoke about This Is How It Goes, a film he recently finished shooting in Ghana. Based on Neil LaBute’s 2005 play, Elba reimagined the story by shifting the racial dynamics, creating what he described as an intense examination of marriage, trust, and identity. Production wrapped just last week, and the project marks another deliberate step toward the filmmaking career he hopes to build.

Despite the long-term plan to step back from acting, Elba’s onscreen journey isn’t over. He is still expected to return as Detective John Luther, with production on the next installment beginning in February. He also repeated that he will not be stepping into the role of James Bond, shutting down speculation yet again.

For now, he remains both an actor and a filmmaker, but his future, he made clear, lies firmly behind the camera.
