Janet Jackson returned to the spotlight at the 2025 American Music Awards, delivering a rare and captivating performance before receiving the prestigious ICON Award. The event, held at Fontainebleau Las Vegas on May 26 and broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+, marked a milestone
in Jackson’s storied career and a major moment in this year’s music calendar.

The 59-year-old music legend opened her performance with “Someone to Call My Lover,” followed by a vibrant remix of “All For You,” complete with a high-energy dance break and electric guitar solo. It was her first televised live performance since 2018, drawing thunderous applause from the crowd. “She hasn’t missed a step,” said AMAs executive producer Jesse Collins. “It was emotional, it was powerful — it was Janet.”

Actor Tasha Smith took the stage to present the award, introducing Jackson as “an artist whose influence reaches beyond borders and generations.” The ICON Award, previously awarded to Rihanna in 2013 and Lionel Richie in 2022, recognizes artists whose work has shaped global music culture.

In her acceptance speech, Jackson expressed heartfelt humility. “I mean no disrespect in any way, but I don’t consider myself an icon,” she began. “My family’s dream was never to be famous. We just loved music, dancing, and singing.” Her words struck a chord with fans and fellow artists alike, many of whom stood in ovation.

Born the youngest of the ten Jackson siblings, Janet’s musical legacy spans decades. Her 1989 album Rhythm Nation 1814 remains the only album in history to produce seven singles that reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100. With 11 American Music Awards and five Grammys under her belt, Jackson’s influence is undeniable. Billboard notes that “Someone to Call My Lover” saw a resurgence this year, re-entering the charts after trending on TikTok.

The award ceremony coincided with Jackson’s Las Vegas residency at Resorts World Theatre, where she’s scheduled for six shows between May 21 and May 31. The residency continues to draw sellout crowds, underscoring her enduring star power.  “I hope I’ve inspired other artists to chase their dreams,” Jackson said, closing her speech. “Because of you and God, I’m standing right here.”

Her message was simple, but it resonated. In an industry often driven by image, Jackson reminded the world that lasting impact is born from passion, persistence, and authenticity.
