Snoop Dogg is set to release a new gospel album titled Altar Call, a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Beverly Tate. The project will be released under Death Row Records on April 27 — what would have been Tate’s 74th birthday.
Announced via Instagram and detailed in an exclusive interview with Okayplayer, the 21-track album blends gospel, hip-hop, and R&B sounds, featuring collaborations with Jamie Foxx, Denaun Porter, October London, Charlie Bereal, and the newly introduced Death Row Mass Choir. Snoop explained that the inspiration behind the album is deeply rooted in the teachings and memory of his mother. “The spirit of my mother will forever live within me,” he said. “This album is a reflection of what she has taught me — to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world. Just another chapter out of the Bible of Love.”
The album cover features a photo of Beverly Tate wearing a pink hat and blouse while holding flowers — a moment previously shared by Snoop on Instagram in 2021, shortly after her passing. “Mama thank u for having me,” he captioned the image. “Thank u god for giving me an angel for a mother.” Snoop has often credited Tate, a long-time church choir director, as a guiding force in his life and career. Notably, she was the one who gave him his famous nickname, saying, “My momma gave me the name. I used to love Peanuts and Charlie Brown — Snoopy was my favorite cartoon character growing up.”
Altar Call follows Snoop’s 2018 gospel album Bible of Love, which topped the US Top Gospel Albums chart and marked his initial exploration into faith-inspired music. He confirmed that Altar Call acts as its sequel, continuing the spiritual journey with tracks like “Mother I Miss You” and the first single, set to drop on April 18.
The announcement comes just four months after Snoop’s collaboration with Dr. Dre on their Missionary album. Reflecting on the upcoming release, Snoop said, “You heard it first. A gospel album, April 27. God is good. Won’t he do it?”
